Known for its excellent moth-repelling
qualities, it’s wonderful fragrance, and the
beautiful red and yellow striped patterns,
American and immigrant craftsman have been
choosing eastern red cedar as the wood of choice
for
cedar chests for over two hundred years. We
here at Henry’s Cedar Chest have been making
genuine handmade
cedar
chest for over 23 years in the Ozark
Mountains of Arkansas in the USA.
Our beautiful cedar chests come in seven
different sizes ranging in price from $20.95 to
$249.95. Every cedar chest is cut from one inch
thick hand-milled boards from Juniperus
virginiana trees taken within a 25 mile radius
of our workshop. They are sanded to perfection
and then varnished for shine and extra
durability and to help bring out the beautiful
grain and pattern of the wood. We also have
cedar chest kits for all you do-it-yourselfers
out there.
Historically, these cedar chests were often
called hope chests and were filled with linens
and other things a young bride would need upon
getting married, hence the need for a naturally
moth repellent wood. Often a cedar hope chest
was handed down from mother to daughter and
carried much importance emotionally as well as
for what the cedar chest may have contained. It
was a tie to the family that was vital when
young newlyweds were frequently moving far
across country away from family and friends.
Smell is a strong reminder to the human mind.
The smell of a cedar chest can bring back warm
memories every time it is opened.
This charming tradition of passing down a cedar
chest has not been lost nor forgotten. We are an
even more mobile society than ever and ties to
family are still an important part of life. It
doesn’t matter whether the chest is an old
family heirloom or a brand new custom-made cedar
chest, the meaning and ties are what we make it.
In these hard times, hope is a highly valued
commodity. If you don’t have an heirloom cedar
chest of your own with which to pass down hope
to the next generation, we have just the one for
you waiting here in our workshop. Whether you’re
looking for a small
